A History of Comfortable Footwear

Wish your shoes were more comfortable? Most people do. If you spend a lot of time on your feet, they’re tired at the end of the day.

Tread Labs can help. We make an awesome array of insoles that transform your shoes from ho-hum to exceptional. Instantly. You’ll be more comfortable on your feet, whether you’re walking to work or running a marathon. Guaranteed.

Tread Labs History

In the late 1970s, Paul Schulman and I built a custom shoe shop (Shoestring Cobblers) in Arcata, CA. We made casual leather shoes and boots – comfort and custom were our selling points.

Five years later I was guiding river trips on the Gunnison in Western Colorado. Needing rugged footwear that allowed my feet to dry, I designed a new concept in sport sandals. In 1989, I quit guiding
to market my new design. Chaco Sandals was born.

Learning foot biomechanics in the early '90s was a game changer. It inspired a rugged sport sandal with aggressive arch contours (Chaco Z/1). Millions have been sold and they are still popular, decades later.

Tread Labs' history

After growing Chaco for 20 years, I sold it in 2009. Working on a new footwear collection, I designed an insole concept that provides incredible comfort. An array of sizes and arch heights guarantees a perfect fit, and the insoles can be used in any kind of low-heeled shoe.

Welcome to Tread Labs. Like Chaco and Shoestring Cobblers, everything we make is focused on comfort and guaranteed against defects in workmanship and materials. Forever. In addition, to make purchasing risk free, Tread Labs offers a 30-day fit guarantee.

Try our insoles walking, running, hiking, cycling or skiing. Feel the difference they make in comfort, alignment, and performance. Discover what exceptional support does for the health and comfort of your feet. If you're not completely satisfied, send them back for a full refund.

A world full of comfortable shoes is our goal. If I can help with any of your foot related concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
